Home Dinners – an Alternative to the Restaurant Life

In Denmark it is actually possible to meet the Danish people in private as a tourist, thereby receiving answers to some of the questions your stay here might have raised: hundreds of open minded and out-going Danes have opened their homes to tourists by signing up as hosts with an agency that offers the guests some hours of conviviality in private settings in the form of ”home dinners” for the pleasure of guests as well as the host families. Here you can ask all the questions you want to – both in regard to the food, the customs and Danish life in general – and all this while you enjoy a nice home cooked Danish meal. Moreover, you experience the Danish concept of ”hygge” (coziness) at first hand!

The agencies ”Dine with the Danes” and ”Meet the Danes” offer this type of arrangement. The agencies know their hosts well and make an effort to ”pair off” the visitors with the right hosts as regards age as well as interests.

An evening in a Danish home can be experienced for about DKK 400 per person. Included in this arrangement is a two course dinner with drinks, followed by tea or coffee. In some cases, it is also possible to spend the night at the hosts’ home (you pay extra for this).

There is also a variant of these home arrangements which is directed at the gay community. It must be stressed that this is not a dating agency, but an agency that solely provides contact between gay and lesbian interest groups.
